Great article. I have had my whole website concept with all the info, mock ups, everything and now been stuck with what to do next for a few weeks. Any way of learning of the actual ball park of a plan before taking quotes?

You forgot the most important part about hiring a web developer. Watch him/her work for 5 minutes.

The first guy I hired would not let me be with him as he coded…said he didn’t like someone looking over his shoulder…I fell for it. Took me 10 frustrating weeks before I realized he was an incompetent developer.

Anyway, I consulted someone else, watched him code for 5 minutes and instantly realized why the other developer didn’t want me watching him fumble around. The new guy charged 50/hour but was worth over 10 times as much as the other programmer and had everything fixed in a matter of few hours.

Hi Nick – thanks for the super helpful article. Looking at the jobs boards you shared, many of them appear to be US based or US focused. I appreciate that web development can be managed across borders, but just wondered if you knew of any boards with a more UK focus?

It's always a question of whether you invest time or money. And since time is a non-renewable resource, spending money is often the better choice. Good luck!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the kind of post that I have been wishing to read. I mean, hoping that someone could convince me that I cannot do it all by myself. Doing it all takes a lot of my time instead of being able to already focus on the contents.
