However there’s so much more to web “design” than how it looks. A professional designer will know not only what looks good, but how to drive traffic to the site: what content needs to be developed, how the site should be organized, the importance of offsite and onsite optimization. Without a strong background in marketing and web development, I think it’s very unlikely that a non-professional is going to build a site that really drives traffic. https://trevellyan.biz/should-i-build-my-own-website/

Hey Francis, thanks for pointing that out! It’s true that many users of self-made websites don’t have a design background. However, by going with a high-quality theme and sticking to what it has to offer, it’s still possible to build a professional-looking website. Plus, trying to figure out how to achieve what they want with their site has prompted many people to dive deeper into the material and learn CSS or other important skills.
Of course, if your business depends on your web presence, it’s always worth thinking about hiring a professional at least for the parts that are outside your capabilities. In that case, it’s a business investment.

On a regular basis, I can easily identify the websites that have been built self-built. It doesn’t matter whether it’s been built using the WordPress route or constructed using WIX or Shopify the results are inferior. Most people do not have the design background to be able to compete with professional websites designs, and the results reveal the truth. I am not saying that there are not some excellent self-made websites out there, but the majority are not well done.

The issue that is not quite so quantifiable is how does the lack of experience and results affect the individual using the website. Websites are used to attract business in most cases. Is a business getting fewer customers/business because they have built the site themselves?
