That’s hard to say in general. It depends on a lot of factors such as the amount of content, how much customization is necessary, if you need any special functionality, widgets, or something else. Depending on that, it could be anything from a hundred dollar to a couple of thousand. Maybe this post will help: https://createawebsitenow.com/hire-a-web-developer/

Hey Anne-Sophie, thanks for the helpful question. In pretty much all cases, you would import your text into the WordPress editor.

You can do this manually via copy and paste and then using the editor formatting options to bring back the original structure with headings, paragraphs, etc.. In the case of the plugin mentioned in the post, it should have functionality to do this automatically (though I’m not sure it’s still a viable option because it hasn’t been updated in a while, however, there is no alternative plugin, which is why it’s still listed).

After that, you can bring back any custom styling you had on the original page via CSS. WordPress also has some built-in functionality in the editor (such as creating columns) that you can use and that might already do the trick.

But you are right, it might make sense to put some information on this in the post. Thanks for pointing that out!

Thanks for this very informative blog post.
I am converting my static one-page website to WordPress and I chose to work with the Underscores starter theme to keep full control on my styling.

The thing I miss here is : how to handle the hard coded text in the html file when you convert it to WordPress (your paragraphs, your titles, your lists, your icons) ?

Where do you enter your titles, your paragraphs, that have had specific classes for styling purposes on your html file ?

If you want to show, let’s say, a list of skills that have, for each of them, a corresponding icon (built with CSS flexbox for example), how/where do you integrate this in WordPress ?

Many thanks for your help !

Hey Daniel, I’m afraid, I am not aware of any other plugin with this capability. If you want to be on the safe side, I’d recommend trying out the plugin in a local development environment. This way, even if something breaks, it won’t have any serious consequences. You can find more information on local environments here: https://createawebsitenow.com/install-wordpress-locally-xampp/.

Also, thanks for pointing that out! I will not this down for a future post update.

thanks for such a complete and complex post. TML Import 2 hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. Do you believe that it’s still safe to use it? Do you know a safer alternative? I did some research and I am afraid I didn’t identify a solution. Best!

I searched for the HTML Import 2 plugin but did not find it. If this plugin is unavailable can you say what would be a suitable replacement?

Hi Humano, the process that we are talking about in this post is only available for self-hosted WordPress websites. You seem to be on WordPress.com. Learn more about the differences here: https://createawebsitenow.com/wordpress-com-vs-wordpress-org/

This sounds like you will have to do some manual work. Either clean up the HTML site so that the tool can automatically convert it to WordPress or manually move over the content to a new WordPress site. If you have back end access to the old site, there are a lot more possibilities. Is that an option?

I’m working on a site for a charity currently.
Someone used an HTML ripper to convert a live WordPress site to html only because the site server was going to be shutdown.
I now need to convert this back into a wordpress format but cant get this tool to do it nicely.

Can you give any ideas on how to do this?
The html code still has all of the old WP references etc in it.

The newest version of WordPress (5.3) is just a few days old. The developer probably hasn’t updated the plugin yet. I would just test it out.

Sounds like you possibly configured something incorrectly. Have you tried more than once with different setups? If it’s not too much content and everything else is fine, you could consider moving the content manually via copy and paste.

Thanks
