To paraphrase Jeffrey Zeldman, design without purpose is decoration. The first determiner of the layout of your site is your content. If the layout doesn’t showcase your content to its best advantage, you’re doing it wrong. I tend to use the large images and fancy flourishes when I don’t have enough content to work with.

Magazine layouts tend to demand large images, and unless they are particularly striking you’re better off with a simple layout. Another consideration is what the site is about: if the viewer can’t tell what the site is about at a glance, you’re doing it wrong. I’ve seen so many examples of style over substance, it’s ridiculous. The style needs to BE the substance, or you fail.
