Jacob Jensen founded the Denmark-based One.com back in 2002.

Since then, they’ve grown into one of Europe’s biggest hosting companies, having 1,500,000 customers across 149 countries.

Impressive – no doubt. But stateside, they’re still virtually unknown. Especially when you stack them up against the likes of HostGator, Bluehost, and GoDaddy.

About One.com

Established in 2002 by Jacob Jensen in Denmark, One.com provides web hosting services. Today, they are among the leading companies in Europe for the sale of domain names and web hosting services.

one.com hosting review

One.com (formerly B-one) has experienced constant growth since its founding and currently has more than 1,200,000 customers and 2,400,000 domains in 149 countries. Moreover, they have five offices worldwide and more than 300 employees working for them.

Today, one.com is owned and managed by the private equity firm Cinven and its CEO, Stephan Wolfram.

One.com operates data centers and network points of presence across Europe, all of which are connected through redundant fibers. The company’s main data centers are with their partner Global Connect, which provides world-class server room facilities and guarantees. Their other data center locations are operated in cooperation with Equinix, Digiplex, and Interxion.

The exact number and location of the servers are unknown.

One.com Features Overview

Let’s have a closer look at One.com’s most important features.

Storage and Bandwidth

One.com’s cheapest “Beginner” plan comes with 50 GB storage and unlimited bandwidth. Even though many other hosts offer unmetered storage, 50 GB for a person who is just starting out is more than enough.

Higher-tier plans also come with more storage space.

Regarding the unlimited bandwidth – According to One.com’s Terms of Service, “Traffic is basically unlimited. However, traffic must be normal in nature and not disrupt that of other customers. If a customer’s traffic disrupts that of others, One.com reserves the right to close the customer’s webspace without notice and/or make a separate charge for the traffic. One.com reserves the absolute right to decide whether or not traffic is excessive. On the closure of a webspace, no refund will be made of any subscription paid in advance.”

So overall, it’s always good to keep an eye on the Terms of Service.

Security

SSL certificates offer shady web hosts another common upsell. They might even throw it in your account, ‘for free,’ only to stick you with a bill when it’s time to renew again.

Back in the day, you didn’t really need an SSL certificate. The only sites that used them were e-commerce shops or other sites that process credit card transactions.

They work by creating a secure connection between a visitor’s browser and your server, so no one could intercept any personal data being passed back and forth.

Cybersecurity has ratcheted up in recent years as the number of hacks, data leaks, and breaches continue to explode.

That prompted Google to add a measure to its market-leading Chrome browser that would effectively warn users when a website didn’t offer a secure connection.

The good news is that One.com offers a free Wildcard SSL Certificate with all of their plans.

You can also have “SiteLock Find” and “Domain Lock” as an add-on with the cheapest plans and starting from the “Expert” plan, it will be already included in the pricing.

Site Migration

One.com doesn’t offer site migration as a service from their side. However, the easiest way to transfer your site to them is to use a 1-click migration tool which is included in most hosting plans, except the cheapest “Beginner” plan.

In case you purchased the “Beginner” plan and need to migrate your existing site to One.com, you’d have to do it manually yourself.

Money-Back Guarantee

The standard money-back guarantee in the hosting industry is 30 days. This gives you a month to test services and decided whether you’re happy with them.

One.com, however, only gives you 15 days to try out their services. Sure, it’s better than nothing, but it’s still a short time compared to other hosts on the market, where some of them even give a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Ease of Use

One.com uses its own custom-made control panel instead of the most commonly used cPanel.

With a custom control panel, we can never be entirely sure if we’re going to like it or not. Some hosts have very beginner-friendly and innovative control panels and some hosts make them too difficult to use.

Luckily, One.com delivers an easy-to-use custom control panel. You can manage your account details, file, security, domains, and more from the dashboard.

Customer Support

One.com is a European outfit that operates in almost 150 countries around the globe.

Admittedly, that probably makes customer support a logistical mess. They have to deal with tons of different languages and time zones that are polar opposites of each other.

Fortunately, they are doing a great job with this balancing act.

They have an extensive knowledge base to help you find answers to common questions. If that doesn’t work, they offer support phone numbers for various locations around the world.

Their email support promises to answer within 24 hours. They also have live chat that’s available 24/7/365.

One.com Performance Stats

Now let’s have a look at One.com’s performance data.

Uptime

During our last testing period, One.com delivered a solid 99.95% uptime which fits the industry standard of 99.93%.

However, recently there has been a huge improvement in their uptime, coming at >99.99% during the last 6 months. There were four outages with only seven minutes of downtime.

Page Load Speed

Google updated its mobile page speed benchmarks for companies.

Basically, they analyzed website speed across millions of sites and correlated the results to visitor behavior. For example, they found that “53% of mobile site visits leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load.”

It makes sense when you think about it, right? Three seconds is almost an eternity when you’re browsing on your phone.

But here’s the most depressing part:

The average page loading time they saw was closer to 15 seconds! (Or nearly five times longer).

If you stand to lose half of your traffic when your pages don’t load within three seconds, just guess how many would leave if it took five times longer? Pretty much all of them, most likely.

Fortunately, our tests showed that One.com was able to consistently deliver an average of 517 ms over the past 6 months.

It’s hard to say if we recommend One.com or not.

One.com started strong. Their average page speed was pretty good. Support options were also fast, which is impressive given their large, worldwide footprint.

Moreover, their uptime is nearly perfect. And we liked the fact that they threw in some extra stuff, like an SSL certificate, and a website builder.

Unfortunately, there were some drawbacks that we could not overlook (high renewal fees, limited features, and a 15-day money-back guarantee) that makes One.com just a bit too average for our taste.

    Very expensive

I have been a happy customer with One.com for many years, 10 years +, but I believe I have to change now due to high cost. 5 years ago I paid about 40,- USD for a year, then the price increased steadily until today when I received an invoice for about 212,- USD. This is really not acceptable, so I will have to find another host.

    cost doubled in one year

Very good service BUT year over year, cost just doubled with an added functionality SiteLock Security, which I wasn’t aware of.

After more than 10 years with one.com, maybe it is time to move on…. Another issue is that I find their website and related functionality not always very user friendly. But this may be just me.

    Bad for Website Optimization

I’m a website developer and an SEO Specialist. I’m having trouble with the Server response time from one.com and it makes the website load slowly. Everything is in order and optimized, all are green except for “Reduce initial server response time” and all Gmetrix, pingdoms, ang google pagespeed. The culprit of very slow loading is the “server response time” which makes me mad about it.

The client transferred to bluehost and we got A grade at GMetrix and same to Pingdom and 92/75 at google pagespeed. It’s a huge impact and changes.

    Like em

I really like one.com. I’m an illustrator and used them for my website for about 5 years before switching to GoDaddy (at the time I was an animator and they didn’t support the video that I needed – I think they do now). I switched back recently (no video anymore) with my existing WordPress site and am very happy to be back. Never had problems with my website being down. Sometimes it loads slowly but this could be due to many factors. I like their email service and their website builder seems pretty good. I don’t like that I can’t call them, but they are responsive via chat or email.

No problem with uptime in the UK

I use them for a number of years now on 3 sites at the moment, considering 4th. Never had an uptime/downtime problem, but I wasn’t monitoring that closely to be honest. Might have a look. Very happy with their pricing and SSL certificate option and that I do not have to worry about it. Was very easy to set up my WordPress sites. Generally easy to use BUT be careful when renewing – the drop-down menu and options are quite confusing and before you know it – you might end up paying twice or pay for something you didn’t think you were paying for! I hope they sort it out in the control panel to make it easier/clearer to use going forward. However, their support is good, and they did refund the mistaken payment pretty quickly, which is why I am thinking of staying with them. I wonder if the downtime was an issue in the US as they are so Europe focused?

    Good base support

I’m hosting my website for almost 10 years now. I never had a major issue with it. Only drawback is their limited options on the base plans. But if you only need one website i would advise you to look at it.
